Wire Gauge and Amperage: How to Match AWG to Amps

Match AWG to amps safely: start with load and equipment rules, then check wiring method, adjusted ampacity, terminals, protection, and voltage drop.

How do you match wire gauge to amperage?

Use this order: calculate the load and identify any equipment-specific rules; choose the wiring method; select a conductor with enough adjusted ampacity; check termination limits and overcurrent protection; then review voltage drop. An AWG chart is a recognition aid, not installation approval.

American Wire Gauge runs backward: a smaller AWG number means a larger conductor. Gauge is only one input. Material, insulation or cable type, ambient temperature, conductor grouping, terminals, load type, breaker or fuse, and the adopted electrical code can change the answer.

There is no single U.S. code edition that this national explainer can treat as universal. Washington currently adopts the 2023 NEC by reference and says its state chapter controls if the two conflict. Washington WAC 296-46B-010 New York City’s current electrical code uses the 2020 NEC with city-specific amendments. NYC Electrical Code Use the edition and amendments adopted by the authority having jurisdiction for the permit.

What 14/15, 12/20, and 10/30 actually mean

The familiar 14/15, 12/20, and 10/30 pairings need a label, not just numbers.

Copper conductor Recognition value Narrow context
14 AWG 15 A 60°C NM-B/UF-B chart value; check adopted NEC small-conductor protection rule and exceptions
12 AWG 20 A 60°C NM-B/UF-B chart value; check adopted NEC small-conductor protection rule and exceptions
10 AWG 30 A 60°C NM-B/UF-B chart value; check adopted NEC small-conductor protection rule and exceptions

In Cerrowire’s 60°C NM-B and UF-B column, 14 AWG is listed at 15 A, 12 AWG at 20 A, and 10 AWG at 30 A. Cerrowire ampacity chart Cerrowire says those ampacities are based on the 2017 NEC and omit temperature corrections and ampacity adjustments that may be required. Cerrowire chart warning

That makes this table a screen, not the governing design table. Under an adopted NEC, check the current versions of the ampacity, small-conductor overcurrent, termination, load, and equipment rules, plus local amendments. NEC 240.4 includes exceptions and equipment-specific protection paths; do not treat the three values as universal permission for every conductor or load.

If the job is EV charging, the EV charger permit guide covers the separate permit and inspection question that belongs upstream of conductor purchase.

Why breaker size cannot be chosen in isolation

A breaker or fuse cannot be chosen from load demand alone. The conductor, equipment, and overcurrent device have to work as a system.

For workplaces covered by OSHA’s electrical design rules, conductors and equipment must be protected from overcurrent according to their ability to safely conduct current. 29 CFR 1910.304 Replacing a tripping breaker with a larger one without checking the full circuit can leave conductor segments, splices, receptacles, or equipment beyond their allowed protection.

The practical sequence starts with the load because continuous loads and equipment such as motors, HVAC units, welders, and EV charging can have rules beyond a general branch-circuit chart. Then select the wiring method and conductor, apply required corrections and adjustments, check the temperature basis at terminations, coordinate overcurrent protection, and review voltage drop.

OSHA requires listed or labeled equipment to be installed and used according to instructions included in its listing or labeling. 29 CFR 1910.303 Nameplates, maximum-overcurrent markings, terminal conductor-material markings, and installation instructions are part of the check, not paperwork to review after sizing.

What changes the required wire size?

  • Wiring method first: cable assemblies and individual conductors in raceway follow different installation rules. Our Romex versus conduit guide explains that choice before conductor sizing.
  • NM-B temperature basis: Washington’s current NM-B rule says the ampacity of #10 AWG and smaller ungrounded conductors may not exceed the 60°C conductor value. Washington WAC 296-46B-334
  • Correction and adjustment: That rule permits the 90°C rating for adjustment and correction calculations only when the final #10 AWG-or-smaller result does not exceed the 60°C value. Washington WAC 296-46B-334
  • Grouping: In Washington, more than two qualifying NM-B cables without spacing through the same insulated or sealed framing opening require conductor ampacity adjustment. Washington WAC 296-46B-334 This is a concrete example of why conductor count and installation geometry belong in the calculation.
  • Terminations and conductor material: use the termination-temperature rule in the adopted code and equipment identified for copper or aluminum as installed. OSHA’s equipment evaluation expressly includes heating effects under all conditions of use. 29 CFR 1910.303
  • Equipment-specific rules: check the adopted code article and equipment instructions for motors, HVAC, EV charging, welders, ranges, and similar loads instead of extending a branch-circuit shortcut.
  • Distance: voltage drop is a separate check. Southwire says its calculator limits conductor size using both voltage drop and NEC ampacity. Southwire voltage-drop calculator

The Washington examples show current 2023-NEC-based rules in one jurisdiction; they do not replace the adopted code where your project is located.

Wire gauge and amperage FAQ

Why does a smaller AWG number mean a larger wire?

That is how the American Wire Gauge scale is ordered. Lower AWG means a larger conductor, but AWG alone does not establish allowable current.

Can I install a 20-amp breaker on 14 AWG copper?

Do not approve that change from a generic chart. The familiar 14 AWG/15 A value is tied here to a 60°C NM-B/UF-B chart. Check the adopted code’s small-conductor overcurrent rule, exceptions, cable, terminals, load, and equipment before changing protection.

Which NEC edition controls wire sizing?

The edition and amendments adopted by the authority having jurisdiction control. Washington currently references the 2023 NEC, while New York City’s current code uses the 2020 NEC with city amendments.

Do hot locations or grouped conductors change ampacity?

They can. Apply the correction and adjustment rules in the adopted code. Washington’s NM-B rule, for example, requires adjustment for more than two qualifying cables grouped without spacing in specified insulated or sealed openings.

Is aluminum always one or two AWG sizes larger than copper?

Do not use that shortcut. Select from the applicable aluminum ampacity provisions and use equipment and connectors identified for aluminum, following their listing and installation instructions.

Does conduit let the same wire carry more current?

Not by itself. Choosing raceway rather than a cable assembly changes the wiring method and the rules you must check; it does not create automatic extra ampacity.

Does a long run change ampacity?

Distance creates a separate voltage-drop check and may lead to a larger conductor. It does not raise a conductor’s allowable ampacity.
