Kansas Plumbing License: Local Rules Guide

Kansas plumber licenses are issued by counties and cities under state exam and experience rules. Learn the local certificate, contractor, CE, and portability path.

How does Kansas plumber licensing work?

Kansas statutes establish a county-and-city plumber-licensing framework. K.S.A. 12-1509 says a county or city that requires plumber licensing may conduct the designated exams and must verify experience and issue the local credential. Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes, K.S.A. 12-1509

The Kansas Business Center gives the same operational direction: Kansas state guidance directs construction and contracting businesses to city and county licensing requirements and says trade-specific plumbing licenses may be required. Kansas Business Center construction starter kit These sources establish the local framework but do not independently prove the categorical absence of every possible state credential, so this guide does not make that broader claim.

Start with the authority for the job address. Ask whether it issues the individual journeyman or master certificate, the contractor-business license, or both, and which office controls permits. That local issuance model differs from a centralized state-board ladder like the one in our Texas plumbing license guide.

How the local model changes the workflow

Use the job address to build a jurisdiction map before bidding. A metro area can include several cities, unincorporated county territory, and a shared department with different permit boundaries.

MABCD’s contractor page says its new licenses cover unincorporated Sedgwick County, Wichita, and small cities in its jurisdiction. MABCD contractor licensing Its site separates contractor licensing, master and journeyman trade certificates, continuing education, permits, and inspections.

Keep these questions separate:

  • Which individual trade certificate applies?
  • Which license must the contracting business hold?
  • Which standard or alternative exam supports the credential?
  • Who may pull the permit and schedule inspections?
  • Does the exact job address fall inside the issuing authority?

A license name without its issuing jurisdiction, exam basis, and business context is incomplete information in Kansas.

Are journeyman and master tiers used locally?

Kansas law recognizes plumbing contractor, master plumber, and journeyman plumber licensing within the county-and-city system. K.S.A. 12-1508 designates ICC, IAPMO, and Prometric standard examinations for determining the competency of plumbing contractors and master and journeyman plumbers. Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes, K.S.A. 12-1508

MABCD requires journeyman and master trade certificates for electrical, mechanical, and plumbing work in Sedgwick County and Wichita. MABCD master and journeyman trade certificates That local certificate does not by itself answer the separate contractor-license and permit questions.

Another jurisdiction may use a standard exam or an alternative exam authorized by K.S.A. 12-1510. Identify which path supports the credential because the portability rules differ.

What experience and exams does Kansas require?

State law sets baseline experience for credentials issued through its standard-exam framework. Before issuing a journeyman certificate, the jurisdiction must verify at least two years of field experience; trade schooling can cover no more than one year and must include at least 930 documented program hours. Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes, K.S.A. 12-1509

Before issuing a master certificate, the jurisdiction must verify either a valid journeyman certificate held for at least two years or at least four years of field experience. Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes, K.S.A. 12-1509

MABCD applies those concepts through its published plumbing paths. For its plumbing journeyman certificate, MABCD lists either one year of field experience plus one year of plumbing trade school, or two years of field experience, plus a score of at least 75% on an approved exam. MABCD trade certificate requirements Use the destination jurisdiction’s current application to confirm accepted exams, experience format, score report, and whether preapproval is required.

The business license, qualifier, and permit side

A trade certificate addresses the individual. A contractor license addresses the business. MABCD’s contractor page requires the trade certificate and test results for a trade-contractor filing. MABCD contractor licensing

For that local contractor filing, MABCD requires at least $300,000 in general liability coverage plus workers’ compensation and auto certificates, or the applicable signed and notarized waivers. MABCD contractor licensing MABCD says its qualified person may be authorized to pull permits and schedule inspections for the company. MABCD contractor licensing

Do not generalize those insurance documents to every Kansas jurisdiction; use them as a model for the questions to ask. For entity and registration issues outside the plumbing credential, see our Kansas contractor license guide.

What will licensing cost and how long will it take?

Price the jurisdiction-specific application, exam, trade certificate, contractor license, insurance, bond if required, continuing education, renewal, and permits.

K.S.A. 12-1509 sets the continuing-education baseline for licenses in this framework: at least 12 hours biennially or six hours annually, including at least six biennial or three annual hours of code education. Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes, K.S.A. 12-1509

As one current local example, MABCD lists a $35 trade-certificate fee. MABCD trade certificates MABCD says its certificates are good for two years. MABCD trade certificates MABCD trade-certificate renewal requires 12 CEUs over the two-year term: six trade-specific hours and six general hours. MABCD trade certificates MABCD says new contractor-license review can take up to two weeks. MABCD contractor licensing Those figures apply to that program, not every city or county.

The controllable delay is document quality. Make the business name match across the application, insurance, state records, qualifier authorization, and permit account. Submit the exact score report and experience format the issuing office requests.

When does a Kansas plumbing credential travel?

Kansas portability is more specific than a yes-or-no reciprocity label. A certificate of competency based on the statutory experience requirements and a designated standard exam is valid proof of competency, without another exam, in a Kansas county or city that requires plumber licensing. The destination jurisdiction still issues its certificate after verifying the experience requirements and may charge its uniform licensing fee. Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes, K.S.A. 12-1509

Alternative exams have a different result. A license based on an alternative examination authorized by K.S.A. 12-1510 is limited to the issuing city or county unless the political subdivisions have a reciprocal agreement. Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes, K.S.A. 12-1510

Keep MABCD’s two statements tied to the right credential. For contractor licenses, MABCD states that it does not reciprocate with other jurisdictions. MABCD contractor licensing For trade certificates, MABCD says it does not reciprocate with state testing and accepts only the exams listed on its page. MABCD trade certificates An accepted standard exam or competency certificate can support the individual trade-certificate path without transferring a contractor-business license.

Kansas plumbing license FAQ

How is plumber licensing administered in Kansas?

Kansas statutes establish county-and-city licensing rules, and state business guidance directs contractors to local requirements. Start with the authority serving the job address; these sources do not by themselves prove that no separate state credential exists.

How much experience does a Kansas journeyman certificate require?

Under the state framework, the issuing jurisdiction verifies at least two years of field experience. Trade school can satisfy no more than one year and must include at least 930 documented program hours.

How much experience does a Kansas master certificate require?

The issuing jurisdiction verifies either a valid journeyman certificate held for at least two years or at least four years of field experience.

Can a plumbing credential be used in another Kansas jurisdiction?

Alternative-exam licenses are local unless a reciprocal agreement applies.

Does MABCD reciprocate contractor licenses?
