Which gas-line material goes where?
Do not choose fuel-gas pipe by price per foot. Choose a complete system for the location, pressure, connected load, adopted code, and authority having jurisdiction.
| Material | Practical role | Approval questions |
|---|---|---|
| Black steel, often called black iron | Rigid distribution piping | Which pipe and fitting standards apply? How are joints, corrosion exposure, supports, sizing, and testing handled? |
| CSST | Flexible distribution system | Is the exact product accepted locally? Who is qualified to install it? Which fittings, protection, bonding, sizing tables, and test instructions apply? |
| PE | Proposed buried plastic system | Is the product approved for this service? Which rules govern burial, locating, joining, pressure rating, and the riser or transition? |
| Appliance connector | Final equipment connection | Is the connector listed and accessible, correctly sized, protected, and installed to the appliance instructions? |
For federally regulated pipelines, 49 CFR 192.321 says plastic pipe must be installed below ground except for specified exceptions. That federal rule also requires unencased plastic pipe to have an electrically conducting wire or another locating method while underground. (U.S. Government Publishing Office, 49 CFR 192.321) Those federal operator rules are not a substitute for the building code or utility rules at a house or commercial project.
Local acceptance can change the material decision. New York City’s 2022 fuel gas code requires qualifying carbon steel and wrought-iron pipe but generally bars metallic tubing except as provided in Section 404.2. (NYC Department of Buildings, 2022 Fuel Gas Code Chapter 4) That local example is a warning against treating any material as nationally accepted by default.
Black iron means a compliant steel-pipe specification
Black iron is jobsite shorthand, not a complete specification. The submittal should identify the actual pipe standard, fitting material, joint method, corrosion protection, supports, sizing basis, and test plan.
New York City’s 2022 code requires carbon steel and wrought-iron pipe to be at least standard weight and comply with one of three named standards. (NYC Department of Buildings, 2022 Fuel Gas Code Chapter 4) The same code requires thread-joint compound to be a non-hardening paste or tape that resists the gas being carried. (NYC Department of Buildings, 2022 Fuel Gas Code Chapter 4)
Rigid steel makes routing labor visible: each direction change needs planned fittings, and field work can include cutting, threading, assembly, support, and protection. Do not turn that practical comparison into blanket national rules about galvanized pipe or direct burial. The adopted code and installation conditions control those details.
CSST is a listed system, not generic flexible tube
CSST means corrugated stainless steel tubing, but a bid should name the manufacturer and product line. Tubing, fittings, preparation, routing, physical protection, bonding, sizing, testing, and installer qualifications are a system. Nominal size alone does not make parts interchangeable.
The Gastite guide says FlashShield+ must be installed by a qualified installer who completed the product training program. (Gastite FlashShield+ Design and Installation Guide) For this product, the manual says its capacity tables or appropriate code-approved tables must be used for sizing. (Gastite FlashShield+ Design and Installation Guide) Its inspection checklist calls for Gastite components, strike protection, system sizing, and bonding under Section 4.10. (Gastite FlashShield+ Design and Installation Guide) These are FlashShield+ instructions, not universal dimensions or bonding details for every CSST brand.
Local acceptance still comes first. New York City’s code says metallic tubing shall not be used except as provided in Section 404.2. (NYC Department of Buildings, 2022 Fuel Gas Code Chapter 4) A generic claim that CSST is faster does not answer whether a specific system is allowed, correctly sized, protected, and bonded for the job.
Treat PE joining, pressure, locating, and transitions as one design
PE belongs in a product- and jurisdiction-specific buried-system review, not in a generic roll-of-pipe comparison. For federally regulated pipelines, plastic pipe is generally installed below ground and unencased pipe needs a locating method. (U.S. Government Publishing Office, 49 CFR 192.321) The same federal section says tracer wire may not be wrapped around the pipe and contact with the pipe must be minimized. (U.S. Government Publishing Office, 49 CFR 192.321) Local building and utility rules may impose a different or additional path, so the plans must identify the rule set that actually applies.
Joining is not generic either. The GF Central Plastics manual strongly recommends that electrofusion fittings be installed only by people trained by an authorized instructor who understand PE and heat fusion. (GF Central Plastics Electrofusion Installation and Training Manual) The manual identifies ASTM D2513 as the specification for polyethylene gas pressure pipe, tubing, and fittings. (GF Central Plastics Electrofusion Installation and Training Manual) The GF manual states that pressure ratings depend on end use and governing design factors and directs users to contact GFCP for specific ratings. (GF Central Plastics Electrofusion Installation and Training Manual) Those are manufacturer-specific electrofusion controls, not permission to use any PE product on any building-gas job.
The approval package should name the PE pipe, compatible fittings, joining method, qualified installer, burial and locating details, operating pressure, test method, and listed riser or transition. Do not invent a field transition or assume the plastic can enter a building.
An appliance connector has a narrower role than CSST or PE: it connects equipment to distribution piping. New York City’s code says connectors shall not be concealed within or extended through walls, floors, partitions, ceilings, or appliance housings, subject to listed exceptions. (NYC Department of Buildings, 2022 Fuel Gas Code Chapter 4) Keep connector selection and replacement tied to the connector listing and appliance instructions.
Size the system before choosing the route
Material choice cannot rescue an undersized system. New York City’s code uses total connected appliance load as the sizing basis and assumes simultaneous full-capacity operation unless a diversity of load can be established. (NYC Department of Buildings, 2022 Fuel Gas Code Chapter 4) It allows code tables or equations, the sizing tables in listed-system manufacturer instructions, or other approved engineering methods. (NYC Department of Buildings, 2022 Fuel Gas Code Chapter 4)
Build the load schedule before routing. Include each connected appliance, developed run length, available pressure, allowable pressure drop, the chosen sizing method, and planned loads. If a gas-fired boiler will serve radiant floor heating, or the project adds a tankless water heater, carry that equipment in the gas design rather than treating it as a later tie-in.
Permits and inspections are local. Seattle’s mechanical-permit page says that permit does not authorize gas-line installation because gas lines require a separate permit. (Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections) Use the project authority to settle the actual permit, installer-license, pressure-test, inspection, and utility-release sequence before procurement.
Frequently asked questions
Is black iron actually iron?
In common jobsite language, black iron usually means rigid black steel fuel-gas pipe. The specification should name the accepted steel standard, fittings, joints, corrosion controls, supports, and sizing method.
Is CSST the same as a flexible appliance connector?
No. CSST is a distribution piping system governed by its listed components and manufacturer instructions. An appliance connector makes the final equipment connection and is not a substitute for branch piping.
Can PE gas pipe enter a building?
Do not assume it can. The approved design must show where the buried PE system ends and how it transitions under the applicable code, utility rules, and listed product instructions.
How is gas pipe sized?
Start with connected appliance input, available pressure, allowable pressure drop, and developed run length. Then use a method accepted by the authority, such as adopted code tables or the sizing tables for the listed system.
