Fieldwire vs Autodesk Build: Field Tool or Full Platform

Compare Fieldwire with Autodesk Build, now presented in current Forma branding, across field workflows, project controls, pricing, rollout and fit.

Fieldwire or Autodesk Build: the short answer

Choose Fieldwire when the buying problem is field execution on drawings: mobile plan access, markups, tasks, punch work and fast crew adoption. Choose the Autodesk option now presented as Forma Build when the problem reaches into broader project controls such as formal information workflows, cost management, quality, safety and closeout.

The naming needs a current caveat. Autodesk’s construction site says Autodesk Construction Cloud is now part of Autodesk Forma, that product names have been updated, and that some resources still use the former branding. Its current product navigation lists Forma Build. This guide retains “Autodesk Build” in the title because that is the comparison buyers still search, but procurement should use the current Autodesk quote and entitlement names.

The decision is not “simple versus advanced.” It is whether a plan-centered field workflow can remain the system of record or whether the organization needs broader controlled processes around it. Read our full Fieldwire review if you need the product baseline before comparing.

When Fieldwire is the better fit

Fieldwire is the better fit when drawings and field tasks are the center of the workflow. Fieldwire says its mobile plan viewer works on web, iOS and Android with versioning and auto-hyperlinking, while mobile markups and as-builts can be recorded offline. Its official site also groups tasks, punch lists and inspections in the field workflow.

That combination suits crews that need to open the current sheet, locate an issue, attach evidence, assign responsibility and keep working through weak connectivity. It can also reduce rollout scope because the pilot can stay close to what foremen and superintendents already do.

Fieldwire is not limited to basic plan viewing. Its current plan comparison places reports and exports in Pro, custom forms and app integrations in Business, and RFIs, submittals, change orders and budget in Business Plus. That matters because a buyer should compare the correct Fieldwire tier with Autodesk—not compare Fieldwire Basic with an enterprise package.

Choose Fieldwire first when:

  • field adoption is the highest implementation risk;
  • plan-based tasks and punch work are the main record;
  • offline markups matter more than a broad portfolio environment;
  • the team can keep accounting, estimating or corporate document controls elsewhere;
  • a smaller pilot must prove value before a wider rollout.

Use our construction punch list software guide to define the closeout details the pilot must preserve.

When the Autodesk platform is the better fit

Autodesk is the stronger direction when several controlled workflows must connect. Autodesk’s current construction site says its project-management capability connects field and office teams through RFIs, submittals and daily reports; it separately describes centralized document management and model coordination. Those capabilities sit in the broader Autodesk Forma construction environment.

The current pricing page lists Forma Build in the Construction Operations offer. Autodesk lists project management, automatic submittal logs and cost management as build capabilities. It also lists quality management, safety management and project closeout. Review the current offer rather than relying on an old Autodesk Build or PlanGrid feature chart.

That breadth can justify the heavier evaluation when an owner or GC needs common controls across projects, formal reviews, cost context and governed documents. It also creates more implementation work: roles, permissions, templates, naming standards, integrations and ownership have to be decided.

Choose the Autodesk path first when:

  • RFIs, submittals and daily reports need a formal cross-company process;
  • cost, quality, safety and closeout belong in the same governed environment;
  • document or model coordination is an organization-level requirement;
  • the team is prepared to configure and administer the platform;
  • procurement can verify which current Forma products and services are included.

Pricing: public tiers versus a configured quote

Fieldwire publishes a public per-user ladder. At the time of this review, its official page listed Basic at $0 per user per month, Pro at $39, Business at $64 and Business Plus at $89, with the paid figures shown as billed annually. The same page provides a plan-by-plan feature matrix.

Autodesk’s current pricing page uses “Get a Quote” for Construction Operations. Autodesk says it supports flexible user-, project- and account-based pricing. That means a buyer needs a written configuration and quote for the current Autodesk package.

Do not infer which product is cheaper from a public seat price versus a quote. Build a three-year comparison that includes:

Cost category Fieldwire Autodesk option
Software Correct tier × paid users Quoted products, access model and services
Setup Projects, sheets, forms, statuses Products, permissions, templates and governance
Migration Drawings, tasks, forms and records Drawings, documents, workflows and integrations
Training Field and admin roles Field, office, admin and partner roles
Parallel operation Time while old and new records overlap Time while old and new records overlap
Exit Export formats, history and attachments Export formats, history, models/documents and attachments

Ask both vendors to state renewals, support, storage or usage limits, implementation services and export access in writing. A number without its included workflow is not a useful comparison.

A seven-step project test

Run both options through one controlled project packet instead of scoring generic demos.

  1. Load the same drawing revision. Measure setup time, sync behavior and how clearly each tool handles a superseded sheet.
  2. Create the same field issue. Add location, responsible party, due date, photos and status; then complete it offline and reconnect.
  3. Route one RFI and one submittal. Record who can draft, review, respond, distribute and close each item. Our construction RFI software guide explains the controls worth checking.
  4. Test a cost or change workflow. Decide whether the record belongs in the candidate or should remain in another system.
  5. Change permissions mid-project. Add a subcontractor, remove access and confirm what remains visible.
  6. Export the record. Verify drawings, markups, issue history, attachments and formal correspondence outside the product.
  7. Count administration. Estimate who will maintain templates, users, project standards and integrations after launch.

Choose Fieldwire if it completes the field loop cleanly and broader controls can remain elsewhere without duplicate entry. Choose the Autodesk configuration if the pilot proves that connected formal workflows remove enough handoffs to justify the setup and governance. If neither does, use our Fieldwire alternatives guide to shortlist by the specific failed workflow.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between Fieldwire and Autodesk Build?

Fieldwire centers mobile plans, markups, tasks and punch work. Autodesk’s current Forma construction environment reaches into broader formal workflows, documents, costs, quality, safety and closeout. Verify the exact current Forma Build package in the Autodesk quote.

Is Autodesk Build now called Forma Build?

Autodesk says Autodesk Construction Cloud is now part of Autodesk Forma, its product names have been updated, and some resources retain former branding. Its current site lists Forma Build. Buyers should match legacy references to current quote and entitlement names.

How does Fieldwire pricing compare with Autodesk?

Fieldwire publishes per-user tiers, including a free Basic tier and three paid tiers billed annually at the time checked. Autodesk’s current pricing page directs buyers to request quotes and says user-, project- and account-based pricing are available. Compare configured three-year costs, not one headline number.

Which is better for offline field work?

Fieldwire explicitly says mobile markups and as-builts work offline. Test the complete offline loop—opening plans, recording an issue, attaching evidence, closing work and resyncing—on the devices and sites your crews use.

Which should a smaller contractor choose?

Start with Fieldwire when plan-based field execution is the core need and broader controls can remain elsewhere. Consider Autodesk when the business can support the administration required to connect formal project, document, cost, quality and closeout workflows.
