Procore vs Autodesk Build: Construction Platform Comparison

Compare Procore with Autodesk Build, now Forma Build, on project controls, models, financial workflows, pricing structure, field use, and buyer fit.

Procore vs Autodesk Build: the quick verdict

Procore is the stronger default for a commercial GC standardizing project controls, field records, financial workflows, and broad collaboration. Autodesk Build, now presented as Forma Build, is the better fit when Autodesk design data and model-management workflows sit at the center of delivery.

The name needs an update before the comparison goes further. Autodesk says Autodesk Construction Cloud is now part of Autodesk Forma and that ACC product names have been updated. The current Autodesk Forma pricing page lists Forma Build inside its Construction Operations offer. Contractors still searching for Autodesk Build are looking at the same buying decision under newer branding.

Neither choice should be made from a generic feature checklist. Map the system that currently owns drawings, models, RFIs, submittals, budgets, commitments, changes, daily records, and accounting exports. The lower-risk platform is the one that removes the most critical handoffs without creating a new duplicate record.

Feature matrix: compare the workflow, not the logos

Decision area Procore Autodesk Build / Forma Build What to prove in a demo
Project controls Scheduling, RFIs, submittals, documents, daily logs, tasks, punch, correspondence Project management, submittal, quality, safety, closeout, document and issue workflows in Autodesk Forma offers Run one RFI and one submittal from field issue through closeout
Financial controls Budget visibility, commitments, change orders, accounting connections Cost management appears in the Construction Operations capability set Reconcile one budget change through commitment, forecast, invoice, and accounting export
Model coordination Supports models and connected workflows, but confirm modules and integrations Autodesk sells a dedicated Model Management offer with coordination, clash detection, and connected issues Upload a multidisciplinary model, create a clash issue, resolve it, and publish the change
Collaboration Procore advertises unlimited users and data for annual contracts, subject to its stated product exception Autodesk advertises flexible user-, project-, and account-based pricing Price employees, designers, owners, and subcontractors who need real access
Ecosystem App marketplace plus accounting and scheduling connections Autodesk design, model, preconstruction, and construction products plus an integration ecosystem Draw a system-of-record map and test two critical integrations

Procore lists construction scheduling, RFI tracking, submittals, and document management as core project-management tools. Its project-management page also lists drawings, daily logs, timecards, punch lists, and financial visibility.

Autodesk lists project management and automatic submittal logs in its Construction Operations capability set. The current Autodesk Forma offers also display cost, quality, safety, and closeout categories. Availability can depend on the offer and contract, so make the sales team mark each required capability on the quote.

Pricing: both require a scoped quote

Do not compare an Autodesk seat count with a Procore quote until both proposals cover the same workflow. Include required products, project volume, users, external collaborators, data migration, integrations, implementation, training, support, storage, renewal assumptions, and usage limits.

Procore says it charges an upfront annual fee by product based on Annual Construction Volume, the aggregate dollar value of construction work across projects. Its pricing page also says annual contracts include unlimited users, data, and support, while noting that Field Productivity is priced based on FTE.

Autodesk says it supports flexible user-, project-, and account-based pricing. Its Forma pricing page presents Model Management, Preconstruction, and Construction Operations as quote-based offers. The old shortcut that one vendor is always per-seat and the other is always volume-only is too crude for a current budget.

Request a base quote and a three-year cost schedule. Run sensitivity checks for higher construction volume, more projects, more internal users, broader subcontractor access, and added modules. Our Procore pricing guide explains how to interrogate the Procore side.

Pros and cons that matter in operation

Platform Advantages Tradeoffs to test
Procore Broad project controls; financial and field workflows on one platform; unlimited-user model in the standard annual-contract description; integration marketplace Annual Construction Volume affects pricing; product selection and implementation need careful scoping; model-heavy teams should test coordination depth
Autodesk Build / Forma Build Lives inside Autodesk Forma; construction operations can connect with Autodesk data and model-management offers; strong path for Autodesk-centered teams Model Management is a distinct offer on the current pricing page; user, project, or account pricing requires scenario testing; confirm what is included

The biggest risk with either platform is buying breadth without establishing ownership. Decide who owns standards, permissions, templates, support, data quality, and release testing. Enterprise software does not remove process discipline; it makes good or bad discipline repeatable.

Who each platform fits best

Procore fits a GC, owner, or specialty contractor that wants a common operational backbone across many projects and stakeholders. It is especially compelling when budget visibility, commitments, changes, RFIs, submittals, daily records, and accounting connections need to live close together. Read our full Procore review for the operator-level fit.

Autodesk Build, now Forma Build, fits a team whose projects already depend on Autodesk design and model workflows. The case strengthens when designers, VDC staff, and construction teams need connected issue handling across Revit, Navisworks, and Autodesk Forma. A smaller field-first team that does not need this depth should also compare Fieldwire vs Autodesk Build.

Company size alone does not decide it. Count process complexity, required collaborators, model dependence, financial-control depth, and systems that must remain in place.

Alternatives worth including in the shortlist

Do not force this two-platform comparison if neither matches the operating model. Include alternatives by the gap you are trying to close:

  • Field adoption without a full enterprise platform: compare focused field and document tools.
  • Residential building and remodeling: evaluate platforms built around selections, client communication, and residential production.
  • ERP-first control: examine systems where accounting and project operations share a deeper financial core.
  • Scheduling and program controls: consider dedicated planning tools when the critical path is the dominant problem.
  • A different enterprise construction backbone: use our Procore alternatives guide to widen the field.

The construction project-management software comparison can help build a shortlist before enterprise sales cycles consume the team.

How to make the final decision

Run both vendors through the same project script. Use real but anonymized records, not a polished sample job:

  1. Publish a drawing revision and show who is notified.
  2. Create a field issue, convert it to an RFI, and link the response back to the affected record.
  3. Route a submittal through reviewer changes and closeout.
  4. Create a potential change, update the budget forecast, and connect the approved change to its commitment.
  5. Upload or federate a multidisciplinary model, identify a clash, assign it, and verify the fix.
  6. Complete a daily record with weak connectivity.
  7. Invite a subcontractor, limit permissions, and retrieve the audit history.
  8. Export the project record and show what remains usable after contract termination.

Score each step pass, fail, or unresolved. Use the construction software demo checklist to cover security, migration, support, and contract terms. Pick the platform with fewer unresolved controls on workflows that can delay work or distort cost.

Two different bets on the center of a project

Procore starts from construction operations. Its product story puts field records, project controls, schedule, documents, and cost visibility around the people delivering work. Models can participate, but the operational record is the center.

Autodesk starts from connected design and construction data. Forma now spans model management, preconstruction, and construction operations. This does not mean every capability comes in one purchase. It means the surrounding Autodesk ecosystem can keep design, coordination, and build workflows under one vendor architecture.

The practical question is not which philosophy sounds more modern. Ask which record must remain authoritative when drawings, models, schedules, budgets, and field conditions disagree. Then test how each platform resolves that conflict and records the decision.

Pricing models head to head

Cost driver Procore Autodesk Forma Buyer action
Base structure Annual fee by selected product and Annual Construction Volume Flexible user-, project-, and account-based pricing across quote-based offers Require each quote to state the metric, term, included products, and limits
Users Procore advertises unlimited users in annual contracts User-based pricing is one available Autodesk structure Price full collaboration, not only administrators
Data and support Procore advertises unlimited data and support Autodesk advertises support and offer-specific capabilities Confirm storage, support hours, response targets, and services in contract
Implementation Services are available; scope is proposal-specific Expert services are available; scope is proposal-specific Separate required implementation from optional services
Growth case Test higher Annual Construction Volume and added products Test more users, projects, accounts, and offers Model the expected three-year operating case

Do not insert unsupported market averages into the comparison. The only defensible total is the written proposal for your scope, adjusted for internal implementation labor and systems you can actually retire.

Where Autodesk has the model-coordination edge

Autodesk’s current Model Management offer combines Model Coordination, Design Collaboration, Forma Data Management, Navisworks Manage, and related tools. Autodesk says multidisciplinary model uploads can automatically detect clashes. The official Model Management page also says issues can be tracked and fixes verified across Navisworks, Revit, and Autodesk Forma.

That is a concrete advantage for a team already authoring and reviewing models in Autodesk tools. It reduces vendor boundaries around clash detection and issue resolution. But buyers should not collapse Forma Build and Model Management into one assumed license. The current Autodesk pricing page presents them as different offers. Put the required model workflow on the proposal and make the vendor identify every included product.

Procore still belongs in the test. Ask it to ingest the same model, preserve issue identity, control permissions, work on field devices, and maintain a usable audit trail. The winner is the workflow with fewer manual publishes and less ambiguity about which version is current.

Where Procore has the financial and field edge

Procore says its project-management product connects field production data to the budget, tracks labor costs and commitments, manages change orders from the field, and syncs job costs with accounting software. See the Procore project-management details. Those connections make Procore the stronger first test when project events must become financial decisions quickly.

Its collaboration model also matters operationally. Procore says annual contracts include unlimited users and that clients, subcontractors, and vendors can be included. That can simplify broad participation, though permissions, training, and adoption still require management.

Do not award this category from the product page. Make both vendors run the same field-to-cost scenario, then inspect the budget change, commitment, approval, forecast, invoice, accounting export, mobile record, and audit history. The platform that cannot explain a changed number loses, even if its dashboard looks better.

Procore and Autodesk Build questions
